Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Help Topics
Welcome to our SEO tutorial, which covers the fundamental concepts of search engine optimization.
History
When intoduced in the early 1990s, there were very few web servers and web pages, so it was a trivial exercise for various indexes to keep a list of every web site in existence. The phenominal growth of the Internet in the 1990s required a more sophistacted way of keeping track of web pages and the content of those pages. Early search engines simply recorded every word on each website and built databases of the words that were considered most important for searching. Web surfers who used search engines were often given a list of sites based on the order that those sites were entered into the database, or based on the number of times a given word appeared on the web page.
As the World Wide Web grew larger, web surfers became dependant on search engines to find web sites. Manual indexes became obselete, as it was impossible for any manual system to keep up with the explosion in new web sites. Web site designers began to appreciate the importance of search engine results, and began to make changes to web pages in order to make them appear higher on search engines. Most of the techniques used in the beginning of search engine optimization are now considered obselete and unethical, but there are still many important On-Page SEO techniques that should be used.
Google was the first search engine to consider not only the words on the web pages from a given site, but also all of the other web pages on OTHER web sites that link to a given web site. It is reasonable to assume that popular web sites will have MANY links from other sites. Because of these changes, Off-Page SEO has become an important part of any site optimization process.
